AJC Radio Message: U.S. Dependence on Energy Extending to China?

February 3, 2010 – New York – AJC Executive Director David Harris, in his national radio commentary, voices concern that the U.S. may become as dependent on energy technology from China as it is today on oil from Arab countries. LISTEN.

“Are we again going to be dependent on others – and send our dollars abroad – for our vital energy? America, let’s get it right this time,” says Harris.

The full text of this week’s commentary follows:

Since 2001, my radio spots have often dealt with the urgent need for greater energy independence.

I’ve argued we’ve been compromising our national security by depending on oil from unfriendly places.

And that our long-term future is best served if we develop clean, renewable energy sources right here.

There’s green in green, has been my motto. It’s forward-looking policy, and it’s good business.

But wait!

The other day, the New York Times had a headline, “China Leading Global Race to Make Clean Energy.”

China, the article said, is “intensely focused” on energy policy.

It notes we could end up trading “our dependence on oil from the Mideast” for reliance on energy equipment from China.

I don’t begrudge China its efforts. But this is yet another wake-up call.

Are we again going to be dependent on others – and send our dollars abroad – for our vital energy?

America, let’s get it right this time.
